Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Definition

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is pervasive, and common amongst doctors, business executives, engineers and airline pilots.Chronic fatigue syndrome is also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/ Immune dysfunction syndrome. Chronic fatigue syndrome is a serious condition that can cause long-term illness and disability. It causes persistent fatigue that affects everyday life and doesn’t go away with sleep or rest.

Causes:

  • Viral infection
  • Problems with the immune system
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Psychiatric problems, such as emotional trauma and stress

Chronic fatigue syndrome can be mild, moderate, or severe.

  • Mild- The individual is able to care for him/herself
  • Moderate- The individual may have reduced mobility and symptoms can vary, Such person may also have disrupted sleep patterns.
  • Severe- The individual is able to carry out minimal daily tasks, such as brushing of teeth, coupled with significantly reduced mobility.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome:

Ayurveda sees disease as an imbalance; an unwanted interruption in the body’s natural equilibrium. Ayurveda attributes this condition to aggravated Vata dosha. The aggravated vata causes dysfunction of all the Dhatus leading to the Ojus Kshaya (depletion of Ojus) generating negative effects at the physical and mental level, lowered immunity.

The following factors have been postulated by Ayurveda to be the cause of fatigue syndrome

  • Excessive mental or physical stress
  • Accumulation of toxins in the tissues
  • Improper nutrition
  • Disruption of biological rhythms
  • Blockage of channels of circulation
  • Low immunity and resistance
  • Poor digestion and elimination
  • Lack of rejuvenation regimens in lifestyle

Symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Aches
  • Pains
  • Dry or rough skin
  • Poor digestion
  • Pharyngitis
  • Mental fogginess
  • Swollen lymph nodes

Line of treatment:

  • Ayurvedic Treatment for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome:
  • Balancing the vata, correcting Agni (digestive system and cellular metabolism – Dhatwagni),  strengthening Ojus.

Treatments:

The treatment modalities include panchakarma, external therapies, internal medications, Activities, Advice of food and lifestyle changes.

  • Panchakarma – Virechana, Basti, Nasya
  • Externally – Abhyanga, Udwarthana, Shiro Dhara, Kashaya Seka, SSPS, Chandana Avagha, Sthanika Basti
  • Internally – Deepana – Carminative
  • Pachana – Digestives
  • Vatanulomana – Balancing vata
  • Rasayana – Rejuvenators

Activities:

  • Specific Asanas, Panayamas, meditation
  • Physiotherapy,  Aqua yoga.

Food:

  • Improving on the intake of water preferably warm water and foods which aid easy digestion.
  • Include fresh ginger tea as it a good digestive – carminative.
  • Timely regular wholesome meals in a conducible non-disturbing atmosphere.

Lifestyle changes:  specific to the individual’s constitution, nature of work and geographical conditions.
