Apply the warmed oil over the entire body and massage using up-and-down strokes over the muscles and circular strokes over the joints. After completing the full body massage, leave the oil on for 15-20 minutes before taking a warm shower.
- Abhyanga should be avoided immediately after administering enemas, emetics or purgatives, during the first stages of fever or if suffering from indigestion.

Chandana - Santalum album
Chandana is used specifically for Pitta disorders such as inflammatory skin conditions (herpes, scabies, pruritis, prickly heat, and insect bites), and internally as an emulsion in the treatment of gastric irritability, dysentery, thirst, and heat stroke. Chandana possess a calming nervine effect, slowing heart rate and promoting contentment and relaxation. The essential oil of Chandana is a very popular remedy for afflictions of the urinary tract, such as cystitis, gonorrhea and pyelitis, and can be used in similar dosages for irritating coughs and bronchitis. Chandana is a useful hemostatic and therefore is indicated for a group of diseases called rakta pitta, all of which are characterized by hemorrhage.
Yastimadhu - Glycyrrhiza glabra
Yastimadhu is demulcent, adrenalmodulator, antibacterial, antiviral, antimutagen, anti-allergenic, expectorant with secretolytic and secretomotor activity, anti-inflammatory, nutritive, spasmolytic, antioxidant, immunomodulator, mild laxative and hepatoprotective.
It is used in cosmetics, toothpastes and powders. A highly valued herb in India used as memory stimulant, in formulation for weakness, anorexia, respiratory troubles, dizziness and palpitation & in bleeding hemorrhoids. It is useful in inflammatory irritation and in genito urinary diseases.
Manjishta - Rubia cordifolia
Manjistha is considered to be a blood-purifying herb. It cools and detoxifies the blood, dissolves obstructions in blood flow, and removes stagnant blood.
Manjistha is used as an immune regulator. Scientific studies have shown that it regulates blood pressure, blood vessel constriction, and helps prohibit blood clot formation. It is used to treat raised uric acid, arthritis associated with gout, glandular swellings, reoccurring skin infections and other skin diseases such as pigmentation anomalies and leucoderma. This herb works very well both internally and externally to promote skin glow and lustre. It also helps remove pimples, freckles, other discolorations, and promotes the healing of skin tissues damaged by injury or infection.
Sareeva - Hemidesmus indicus
Sareeva is alterative, depurative, diaphoretic, diuretic, immunosuppressant and tonic. It promotes health and vigor. Externally it is useful as a wash for genital sores or herpes, or as a non-fomentation for painful, arthritic joints, skin eruptions, skin diseases, elephantiasis, hemiplegia and syphilis. Sareeva's diaphoretic and blood-cleansing action makes it useful for rheumatic inflammation.
Laksha - Laccifer lacca
Laksha is a tonic for liver, stomach and intestines and is useful for kidneys, jaundice and dropsy. It also reduces fat in overweight persons. When combined with other herbs, it helps to reduce muscle and joint pain, reducing backache, sprains, rheumatism, muscular and osteo-arthritic joint pain.
It is mainly used to cure Pitta disorders, mainly related to muscle, bones and joint pain, eye disorders and black fever. It is fairly renowned as a good help for women in menopause or with hormonal disorders.
Tila taila - Sesamum indicum
Sesame oil is immensely popular in India where its use in oil massage (abhyanga) is part of everyday life and an important aspect of Ayurveda. It is the favourite oil for massage as its chemical structure gives it a unique ability to penetrate the skin easily, nourishing and detoxifying even the deepest tissue layers. In fact it is purported to benefit all of the seven tissues (Dhatus). It is the best oil for balancing Vata but can also be used sparingly for Pitta and Kapha.
The antioxidants it contains are reponsible for slowing the ageing process and increasing longevity, and regular oiling of the skin restores moisture to the skin, keeping it soft, flexible and young looking. It also lubricates the body internally, particularly the joints and bowels, and eases symptoms of dryness such as irritating coughs, cracking joints and hard stools.
