NEWS DIGEST |
Learning activity programmes for the guest at IVAC like Rangoli and Mehandi
Rangoli is one of the most popular art forms in India, is thought to the guests as a learning activity programme. It is a form of sandpainting decoration that uses finely ground white powder and colours. The term rangoli is derived from words rang (colour) and aavalli (`coloured creeprs' or `row of colours'). Guests were very enthausiastic and interested to learn and do rangoli.
Mehendi, the Indian term for Henna, is not just a traditional form of body art, but herbs with mystical medicinal and beautification properties. These little olive colored leaves have been used for centuries to beautify women world over; by herbal doctors for their curative power and by cosmetic companies as natural hair conditioner. This coloring herb is known by many names - mehendi in India, Historians are of the opinion that mehendi has been used for over 5,000 years for cosmetic and healing purposes. People dipped their hands and feet in a paste made of mehendi leaves, and found that even when the paste dried and was scraped off, as long as the orange color lasted the body remained cool. From being purely medicinal it transformed into an art, Henna is deep-rooted in historical tradition as it is in medicine. Its designs are an integral part of bridal adornment in Hindu, Muslim and Sephardic traditions. Indians believe Henna to be an erotic herb used during a wedding ceremony. Brides are given a `mehendi party' the day before the wedding, where her hands and feet are decorated exotically with this natural orange color and the initials of the groom inscribed into the intricacies of the design. While they apply the design, they impart knowledge of being a satisfying mate. After the ceremony the groom explores his bride's hand trying to find the initials. Indian designs of mehendi on the hands and feet are mostly fine, intricate, with thin lines defining a lacy, floral and paisley pattern. Large floral patterns on the hands are feet are associated with Arabic designs, with multitude of goodness in its favor, mehendi has over the years come to be associated with good health, fertility, wisdom, protection and spiritual enlightenment. In IVAC, Mehendi design also thought to guest to learn how to make design on hands.

VAIDYA TALK |
Alopecia:
Alopecia is also known as baldness. Baldness is usually most noticeable on the scalp, but can occur anywhere on the body where hair grows. The condition is more common in men than in women. Hair loss is primarily caused by a combination of the aging, change in hormones, family history of baldness, burns and trauma.
Baldness can be classified into various types, depending on the cause.
In scarring alopecia there is associated fibrosis, inflammation, and loss of hair follicles. A smooth scalp with a decreased number of follicular openings is usually observed. |
In nonscarring alopecia the hair shafts are gone, but the hair follicles are preserved. The most common causes of nonscarring alopecia include telogen effluvium, androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, tinea capitis, and traumatic alopecia. |
Male-pattern baldness gives the symptoms of Hair receding, Hair falls out at the top of the head |
Female-pattern baldness gives the symptoms like Hair thinning over the entire head, Hair comes out when brushing. |
Alopecia areata gives the symptoms like rapid hair loss, round or oval patches of hair loss, Sometimes tiny hairs are visible in the patches. Brittle and discolored fingernails and toenails with ridges. |
If it is stress-related it shows gradual shedding of hair, Hairs come out with gentle pulling |
Fungal infections show patches of hair loss, black dots in the patches, itching, scaling and inflammation. |
Ayurvedic approach of Alopecia:
According to Ayurveda, Alopecia is described in three terms, such as - Indralupta, Khalitya and Ruhya. When hair fall is sudden it is known as Indralupta. Long running process of hair fall on the scalp is Khalitya, whereas hair loss on the entire body is Ruhya.
According to Ayurveda, the major reason for hair loss is due to over consumption of lavana rasa (salt). Romakoop (hair follicle) contains bhrajaka pitta (a type of fire energy). Pitta present at the root of the hair increases, in association with vata (air energy), and this appears as the falling of hair. Then kapha (water energy) and raktha (blood ) together block the follicles of the hair by not allowing fresh ones to grow.
Alopecia is always a very difficult subject to treat as there are so many causative factors. Ayurveda herbal treatment has proved very effective in many cases. Ayurveda therefore recommends a unique treatment program for each patient designed to address the unique needs of the patient. With the resulting well-rounded life assessment, the practitioner then recommends a program of natural therapies that includes Massage, Herbs, Nasya panchakarma, Basti Panchakarma, Yoga, Meditation, Dietary and lifestyle recommendations, and other treatments. Ayurveda believes hair to originate from the "Asthi" or bone tissue, and therefore, to treat hair loss, medicines to strengthen bone are given orally on a long-term basis. As mental and physical balance is restored, the individual's overall health and well-being improve and hair loss is reduced or eliminated.

Brush or comb your scalp at least twice every day for better blood circulation and stimulation of secretions from the scalp. |
A gentle wash should be given with shampoo and conditioner every three days. |
Soak a handful of gooseberry in a cup of milk for two hours. Make it as a paste and apply in the hair. |
Do a 'steam-towel-wrap' once in a while, if your cuticles are damaged, as this steaming opens out the pores and absorbs the oil. |
