Life for Yoga

“Yoga facilitates a connection between the individual and the cosmic soul” revealed Dr. Mallikarjuna, an Ayurvedic Physician and Consultant for Yoga, Counseling and Psychotherapy, while he was delivering a talk on ‘Promotion of Positive Health through Yoga’ here recently. The sublimate effect of yoga not just modifies one physically but mentally. It operates as a bridge between your body and mind, enabling you to condition yourself and withdraw from sensual desires thereby offering spiritual liberation, he added.

Hands-on Programs

A row of presentations and lectures on Aromatherapy, Gem Therapy and a demonstration session of our very own freshly innovated herbal facials were conducted at IVAC last month. While the presentations flashed an insight on the pertinent link between Ayurveda and these complimentary therapies, the hands-on facial session flaunted the feel-good-factor of each novelty.

HERB SCOPE

Bilwa

Botanical Name:
          Aegle marmelos

English name:
          Golden Apple
          Stone Apple

Therapeutics:

Ayurvedic texts describe Bilva as a digestive tonic. It is helpful in the healing of ulcerated intestinal surfaces and is highly recommended in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome. Bilva is used both, internally as well as externally. It is astringent and bitter in taste, having anti-diarrhoeal, appetizing, carminative and digestive properties. While it alleviates kapha and vata doshas, bilva is believed to aggravate the pitta dosa. The roots are extremely useful in vata diseases, insomnia, seizures, fevers and hysteria as they calm down the nerves. Bilva is a renowned panacea for chronic diarrhea, dysentery, colitis, bleeding piles, loss of appetite and abdominal dull pains. The decoction of its leaves helps in reducing the phlegm in cold, cough and asthma and is an effective medicament for worms. At IVAC, Bilwa is used in Kashayaseka therapy for all skin diseases, osteo-neuro muscular disorders and in Keshini (herbal hair treatment).

Psychosomatic wellness

The philosophical approach of ayurveda defines health as a state of harmonious unification of the physical, mental and spiritual aspects in a person. It implies that all diseases are but direct manifestations of one’s mental conditions. As Dr. Deepak Chopra, a popular ayurvedic healer describes "The guiding principle of ayurveda is that the mind exerts the deepest influence on the body, and freedom from sickness depends upon contacting our own awareness, bringing it into balance and extending that balance to the body." We can assess a person’s psychosomatic health through his behavioral patterns. Considering the various types of natures of behavior, ayurveda classifies the mental nature basically into tri-gunas, which are: Sattva – marked by equanimity, Rajas – the excited kind and Tamas – the state of inertia. Any disturbance in the balance of the tri-gunas causes physical illness; depending on the intensity or form of disturbance. Besides these temperaments, if the mind is preoccupied it avoids us from caring for our health. Again, there is to consider ama, accumulation of toxins in the body, which psychologically is believed to arrive from holding on to negative emotions and undigested experiences. Therefore, cultivating the right attitude is imperative to obtain a hale body, maintain inner peace and to thereby accomplish psychosomatic wellness.

VAIDYA TALK

Gastro Intestinal Disorders

Gastrointestinal disorders are those in which the bowels do not function properly. It is chiefly caused due to constant indigestion, mal-absorption or accumulation of toxins in the body. GI Disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Inflammatory Bowel Diseases and Gastroenteritis are the most common problems affecting the colon and rectum regions. These disorders include similar symptoms like bloating, abdominal pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, discomfort, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, and changes in bowel habits. Rehydration, dietary therapy, drug therapy, antibiotics, anti-diarrhoeal agents, anti-emetic drugs are the modern day treatments available for GI Disorders.

Explain the Ayurvedic approach to GI Disorders?

According to the ayurvedic perspective, consumption of unhealthy food, irregular food habits, psychological disturbances and violation of body’s natural rhythms leads to imbalance in the tri-doshas (vata, pitta and kapha) that govern all functional aspects of the body. Aggravating these doshas therein leads to deranged agni (digestive fire) which along with ama, toxins accumulated in the body that obstructs circulation and excretory channels, eventually causes GI Disorders. Restoring these underlying imbalances enable the complete process of healing to occur. Ayurveda aims at eliminating toxins and restoration of proper digestion so as to bring back the basic strength and immunity of the body thereby treating GI disorders in a natural way.

How does IVAC assist in the management of GI Disorders?

The healing program for GI Disorders at IVAC are conducted under the administration of our expert ayurvedic vaidyas, who identify the specific cause of the disorder and address an individual’s need through a personal evaluation. Unlike modern medicine that deals with the disease ineffectively further causing the condition to become chronic, IVAC’s therapeutic management intends to re-establish the body’s natural healing and self-repair abilities not just to exclusively cure GI Disorders but to determine longevity and attain the finest form of well-being. Detox therapies like Panchakarma especially Virechana and Basti (yashtimadhu ksheerabasti/takrabasti, based on the condition), Sarvanga Abhyanga and Shirodhara helps softens and liquefies the toxins embedded in the tissues and activate the circulation and the entire GI Tract channels to thoroughly cleanse the entire physiology. The healing of the GI Track is also assisted through implementation of a specific diet that is easy-to-digest yet nourishing, yoga - transcendental meditation, pranayama and reflexology to reduce the mental and physical stress associated with the disease, lifestyle modifications to harmonize with the body’s natural rhythms and ultimately to create an ideal physical, mental and behavioral environment for better healing

 ...Happy healing at IVAC!
