New Delhi: The initial findings of a scientific study carried out during the Vedic ritual in Kerala show that the ancient Sanskrit chants, rites and smoke from the sacred fire accelerate germination of seeds in the vicinity and lower the level of microbe contamination in water and ambient soil, scientists said Thursday.

The ritual of “Athirathram” was held in Panjal village in Thrissur district of Kerala April 4-15.

The scientists researching the impact of the ritual on environment said the fire laced with herbs, wood, milk and the juice of Soma plant, the earliest known intoxicant, acted as a natural purifier. The Soma plant grows in abundance in the Western Ghats bordering Kerala.

A team of scientists said in a statement that “the studies showed encouraging results on the environment”.

The statement by the Varthathe Trust, the organisers of the ritual, said: “There was preliminary evidence that the yagya (ritual) had a positive impact on the germination of the seeds”.

The scientists led by V.P.N. Nampoori, former director of the International School of Photonics, Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), had planted three types of seeds – cowpea, green gram and Bengal gram – around the venue of the ritual.

“The results showed that the growth was accelerated in the case of seeds on the western side of the altar in comparison to other sides. The effect was very clear in the case of Bengal gram which grew 2,000 times faster than the plants on the eastern, northern and southern side,” Nampoori said.

Microbial analysis carried out at distances between 500 metres to 1.5 km of the location of the ritual to count the bacterial colonies before and after the ritual found that “ambient air and water was purer with low microbial count compared to normal circumstances”.

An analysis on the dimensions of temperature from the flames of the “great ball of fire” generated by the Vedic priests using a slow ritual sequence of chants and sporadic offerings of milk, “soma rasa” and clarified butter into a pot holding the sacred fire found the fire ball had a “particular wavelength with unusually high activity similar to what was observed in typical laser beams at about 3,870 degrees centigrade”.

The fire study was conducted by experts from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics in Bangalore.

Kerala-based Vedic scholar M. Krishnakumar said: “The scientific study was a pioneering endeavour to explore the effects of the ritual on people, environment and atmosphere.”

Based on various properties, there are several synonyms for water. Jeevanam is a synonym for water, which means life as water is quintessential for life.

JALA MAHABOOTA (WATER) AND HUMAN BODY:

Water is not only an essential nutrient but is one of the five basic elements essential for the creation of this universe (including the humans). It is the Jala Mahabhoota – the water element.

Charaka Samhita mentions that all types of fluids in the body are made up of Jala Mahabhoota. (Water element) Hence the water we use is of life giving principle and a detailed knowledge of the water is very important.

THIRST – AN URGE TO DRINK WATER

Water is so vital for all our body processes that thirst compels us to drink long before we get dehydrated. Among the natural urges explained in Ayurveda, thirst is explained under the category of 13 NON-SUPPRESSIBLE NATURAL URGES. Suppression of thirst gives rise to dryness of throat & mouth, deafness, fatigue, depression & cardiac pain. For which cold and gratifying drinks are recommended.

PURIFICATION OF WATER:

Ayurveda gives a beautiful explanation on the purification of drinking water at various stages.

1. Filtration through thick cloth.
2. Boiling: This is described as there stages:

a. If the water is hard for digestion it should be boiled and reduced to half of original quantity.
b. If moderately hard for digestion it should be boiled and reduced to two-thirds of original quantity.
c. If slightly hard for digestion it should be boiled and reduced to three-fourths of original quantity.

Water boiled in the above standards will become easy for digestion and good for health.
3. Making it clear with the addition of some herbs: The addition of tubers of lotus plant, pearls, seeds of kataka (Strychnos potatorum), gomedhaka (Dolomite stone)
4. Removing its unpleasant odour by adding into it some fragrant flowers like patala (Steriospermum colais), karavira (Nerium indicum),etc.

The combination of herbs used for the above purpose is available at our Center. contact our Vaidya for more information on the practical process of water purification.

IDEAL WATER FOR DRINKING: Boiled and cooled water / Boiled and luke warm water/ water purified the above way / medicated water (any of the medicated water mentioned below) is ideal for drinking and the quantity depends on the individual’s constitution.

CONCEPT OF WARM/COLD WATER DRINKING IN AYURVEDA: Warm water is easy for digestion and maintains the equilibrium of the body. It is generally advised to take luke warm water. Certain conditions related to pitta or rakta disturbance, alcoholism, fatigue, fainting, giddiness, thirst, burning sensation requires cold water (not refrigerated) for drinking.

WATER AND MEAL TIMINGS:

Water taken before meals dilutes all the digestive juices and causes poor digestion, which in turn leads to inadequate nourishment; the same immediately after meals produces increases Kapha, which leads to laziness, excessive sleep and consequent accumulation of more fat in the body. Hence it is advised to avoid drinking of water at these two times and drink moderate quantity of water during meals itself which is ideal for maintenance of health.

MEDICATED WATER:

A few medicated drinking waters commonly in practice are listed below. Contact our Vaidyas for more information. The raw drug combinations are available with us.

PANCHAKOLA JALA

It is a digestive, carminative, appetiser, anti-rheumatic, anti-pyretic.

In our previous issue we have explained about the Varsha Ritucharya (Daily routine during rainy season) and now we shall describe the concept of water and its applications in the next couple of issues.

Water is essential for all dimensions of life. Over the past few decades, use of water has increased, and in many places water availability is falling to crisis levels. More than eighty countries, with forty percent of the world’s population, are already facing water shortages, while by year 2020 the world’s population will double. The costs of water infrastructure have risen dramatically. The quality of water in rivers and underground has deteriorated, due to pollution by waste and contaminants from cities, industry and agriculture. Ecosystems are being destroyed, sometimes permanently. Over one billion people lack safe water, and three billion lack sanitation; eighty per cent of infectious diseases are waterborne, killing millions of children each year.

Water has no taste, no color, no odor; it cannot be defined, art relished while ever mysterious. Not necessary to life, but rather life itself. It fills us with a gratification that exceeds the delight of the senses

- ANTOINE DE SAINT-EXUPERY

Water is used in literature as a symbol of Purification. Moon is the presiding deity of water.

Ayurveda believes that everything in the universe is made up of five great elements or building blocks – called the PANCHAMAHABHUTHS. Of which water (aap or Jala) is one.

The water element in the body is part of both Pitta and Kapha.

PANCHA MAHA BHUTAS (five elements):

Vata = Space + Air
Pitta = Fire + Water
Kapha = Water + Earth

Classification of water: (Based on the source):

Properties of water:

The properties of water change depending on the source. Once the rain water comes in contact with the atmosphere the properties change depending on the region of fall impregnating the qualities of the Panchamahabhutas.

The water in the atmosphere (before it falls on the ground) is by nature cold and light, its taste is not manifested at this stage.

Water is Jeevanam (Enlivining), Tarpanam (Satiating), Hridyam (pleasing to the mind), Hladana (Refreshing), Bhudhi Prabhodhanam (Stimulating the mind), Suchi and Amruthopamam (Clear and nectar-like in its properties).

It is easily digestible, alleviates Vata and Kapha, cures diseases of pitta, rakta (blood) and visa (poison).

“Water is life’s matter and matrix, mother and medium. There is no life without water.”

- Albert Szent-Gyorgyi

Continuation in the next issue with various applications of water.

HNPL Products specific for Varsha Ritu:

With reference to the Varsha Ritu (Refer the previous issue) – as the digestion is weak, the Tridosha (Vata – Pitta – Kapha) are more likely to go out of balance. Hence the following supplements are recommended. (conditions apply; please consult our Vaidyas, for personalized information)

  • Capsule Digest – This is an excellent combination of herbs which helps in improving the digestive system and corrects the digestive imbalance.
  • Capsule Triphala – Organic Triphala made available in a more palatable and easily dispensable form, helps in rejuvenation and detoxification.
  • Capsule Immunity – A unique single herb medicine which helps in improving the resistance and immunity, where by the post – monsoon complications can be checked.
  • Rasna Choorna – A combination of various herbs, helps in combating the adverse effects caused by cool breeze of monsoon.

The primary objective of Ayurveda is to preserve the positive health and to prevent diseases. Ayurveda has a galaxy of information to maintain harmony and health during various seasonal changes. This is known as RITUCHARYA (RC)

The Rainy season in India falls during the months of mid July to mid September, which is considered as the Dakshinayana (Southern Solstice) and Visarga Kala. During this period the Sun moves towards South and the Moon is more powerful as the Sun loses his intensity and day time gets shorter. Because of this reason the Earth becomes cool added by clouds, rain and cold wind.

Impact of Rainy season on the health:

Ayurveda believes the body is in tune with nature and the changes in the season impacts the body. Due to the debilitating summer, the body starts getting weak, with special emphasis to digestive system and this is further worsened in the rainy season due to the thick hanging clouds, cold wind, water getting polluted by rains, and increased humidity. Because of this the body becomes vulnerable to go out of balance. The three Doshas (Vata-Pitta-Kapha) need to be carefully balanced during this period, more so with Vata.

Recommended lifestyle :

Specific seasonal lifestyle changes with reference to diet.

General and specific preventive measures based on the body constitution.

Diet:
Easily digestible food:

1. Diet predominant in sour and salt tastes, which is unctuous in nature.
2. Old cereals (one year old, well preserved) such as barley, wheat and rice
3. Vegetable / pulses soups cooked with mild spices.
4. Room temperature water mixed with little honey for drinking
5. Whey water

Regimen:
1. Avoid long walks.
2. Keep yourself warm and avoid excessive humidity.
3. Apply warm oil (special herbal oils with sesame oil as the base is the most ideal) to the body before bath. (These are available for purchase from IVAC)
4. Wear light clothes. Mild application (two drops) of essential oils of either Sandal wood, Jasmine, Lavender or Rosemary

Special Ayurvedic measures:

Panchakarma (detoxification based on the individual constitution) Rejuvenation protocols Ayurveda believes that – “The nature and our body are in a continuous process of change and transformation”. To maintain this delicate balance with nature the above measures are recommended after consultation with an Ayurveda specialist (VAIDYA).

The seasonal changes are different in different parts of the planet. The Vaidya will recommend a proper protocol depending on the area you live in and the seasonal changes happening at that place. (Log on to www.ayurindus.com and send your inquiries)

Ayurveda can be defined as a system of oldest healing science, which uses the inherent principles of nature, to help maintain health in a person by keeping the individual’s body, mind and spirit in perfect equilibrium with nature. Ayurveda is a holistic approach to health.

Meaning of Ayurveda

Ayurveda is a Sanskrit term, made up of the words “Auys” and “veda”. “Ayus” means life and “Veda” means knowledge of science. The term “ayurveda” thus means “the knowledge of life” or “the science of life”. According to the ancient Ayurvedic scholar Charaka, “ayu” comprises the mind, body, senses and the soul.

Origin of Ayurveda

Widely regarded as the oldest form of healthcare in the world, Ayurveda is an intricate medical system that originated in India thousands of years ago. The fundamentals of Ayurveda can be found in Hindu scriptures. The Rig Veda, which was written over 6,000 years ago, contains a series of prescriptions that can help humans overcome various aliments.

Aim of Ayurveda

The aim of this system is to prevent illness, heal the sick and preserve life. This can be summed up as follows:

  • To protect health and prolong life (“Swasthyas swasthya rakshanam”)
  • To eliminate disease and dysfunctions of the body (“Aturasys vicar prashamanamcha”)

PHILOSOPHY

Ayurveda is grounded in metaphysics of the “five great elements”: earth, water, fire, air and ether) – all of which compose the Universe, including the human body.

  • Chyle or plasma (rasa dhatu),
  • Blood (rakta dhatu),
  • Flesh (mamsa dhatu),
  • Fat (medha dhatu),
  • Bone (asthi dhatu),
  • Marrow (majja dhatu), and
  • Semen or female reproductive tissue (shukra dhatu)

Are held to be the seven primary constituent elements – saptadhatu Ayurveda stresses a balance of three elemental energies or humors: vata (air & space – “wind”), pitta (fire & water – “bile”) and kapha (water & earth – “phlegm”).

Ayurveda also focuses on exercise, yoga, meditation, and massage.

Ancient Rishis of India who developed the Science of Life organized their wisdom into three bodies of knowledge:

1. Ayurveda, which deals mainly with the physical body;
2. Yoga, which deals mainly with spirit; and
3. Tantra, which is mainly concerned with the mind.

Ayurveda stresses the use of vegetable drugs. Hundreds of vegetable drugs are employed, including Turmeric, cardamom, cinnamon etc.

IV. GREEN BUILDING & SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

As Building account for a large amount of land use, energy and water consumption, altering micro climate. THIS PROJECT has focus on:

1. REDUCING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Promoting concept of natural building, usually on a smaller scale and tends to focus on the use of natural materials that are available locally. These buildings have minimum impact on environment. In turn would help to generate carbon credits.

2. GREEN BUILDING PRACTICES TO BE ADOPTED

a. Sitting and structure design efficiency
b. Reduction in use of high energy material – like cement Aluminum
c. Water efficiency & Water conservation – By reducing the usage of water and recycling of waste water

Green Building, also known as and green construction or sustainable building is the practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building’s life-cycle: from locating Sire to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and deconstruction.

The common objective is that green buildings are designed to reduce the overall impact of the built environment on human health and the natural environment by: Efficiently using energy, water, and other resources, Protecting occupant health and improving employee productivity, Reducing waste, pollution and environmental degradation.

Energy efficient practice in buildings

Using materials that will require minimal maintenance once installed – There are many eco friendly materials which require very less energy and need very less maintenance. Such materials are highly acknowledged for any eco friendly project, because of its hands free usage and widely energy saving properties.

For any eco-friendly project it is very important to concern about where and how all the materials are manufactured. It will not only save but help local of regional communities also reduce transport costs and the energy required to get it to building site.

• Sustainable Site

Site disturbances would be kept to minimum protecting the open spaces and dramatically reducing the development footprint, thus preserving as many as existing trees and other indigenous plants as possible. Special measures for soil erosion and sediment during the construction process. A special outdoor lighting design to control light pollution and to protect nocturnal animals, and to avoid noise pollution.

Recyclable

Recycling would be used to process old or new materials into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce energy usage.

• Waste Management

Waste management is the collection, transport, procession, recycling or disposal and monitoring of waste materials.

• Reusable Product

This helps reduce the cost of managing solid waste and often conserves materials and resources. Reusable product is very useful as these products are used by several times. People can save energy as well as resources.

• Solar Energy

Solar energy radiant light and heat from the sun would be harnessed. Solar radiation is the main source of energy in this project, solar energy would be for multiple activities.

• Water Conservation

By reducing the usage of water and recycling of waster water for different purposes such as cleaning, manufacturing and agricultural irrigation. As we know the importance of water, we can preserve the water, Rain water is the perfect way to preserve the water in a bulk amount. In this project water would be used in various usages such as:

a. Wastewater reuse for gardening and genera cleaning
b. Rainwater harvesting
c. Clothes washers

• Through Architectural detailing & Indoor Environmental Quality

Low fuel-emitting materials shall be adapted for the project, examples such as bamboo floors and water-based paints. Dramatic design features include use of clear glass above to provide reflective natural light, along with windows on the activity side of the building to reduce the need to turn on a light bulb. Overhangs stop direct light from coming into the buildings etc in the summer to keep the space naturally cool. Other sun shading devices to allow the winter sun to stream in lending natural warmth. Nearly every room to have natural light.

Green building materials are:

- Durable
- Low or non-toxic
- Minimal chemical emissions
- Low-VOC assembled moisture resistant
- Healthfully maintained

CARBON CREDICTS

According to Mumbai, India-based Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) which is into trading in carbon credits in India:

“Indian companies have been at the forefront of innovation in use of technology and green field projects. Carbon futures are an ideal platform for these enterprises to get rewarded for adopting eco-friendly practices.

The market for trading in carbon emissions is estimated to be in the range of USD $60 billion to USD &70 billion annually.

India has generated close to 30 million carbon credits and has roughly another 140 million in the pipeline for sale, making it one of the largest beneficiaries in the carbon credit trade, according to MCX.

Indian companies are now turning towards renewable energy projects for a better return on their investments.

What is carbon credit?

As nations have progressed, they have been emitting carbon, or gases which result in warming of the globe. Under the Kyoto Protocol, carbon credits, or carbon emission reductions certificates, are issued by the Clean Development Mechanism Executive Board, the international body that registers projects and issues credits.

A Project has two ways to reduce emissions. One, t can reduce the GHG (green house gases) by adopting new technology or improving upon the existing technology, Or it can tie up with developing nations and help them set up new technology that is eco-friendly, thereby helping developing country or its companies ‘earn’ credits. There is a huge requirement of carbon credits in Europe before 2012.

PROHECT PROMOTERS in India can get linked to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and know the ‘standard” level of carbon emission allowed for its outfit or activity. The extent to which he/she is emitting less carbon (as per standard fixed by UNFCCC) and gets credited in a developing country. This is called carbon credit.

AYURVEDA HEALTH CARE RESORT project has immense potential for CARBON TRADING as the entire project is based on using clean Technology $ adopting eco-friendly practices, renewable energy etc.

V. ACCREDITION

An Eco friendly project with green building practices in compliance with LEED and GRIHA certification using International standards for quality construction and monitoring. Voluntary building rating systems play an important role in popularizing the concept of green design.

The Buildings constructed based on the Green concepts for this Resort would confirm to the prescribed standards. There would be continuous assessment and monitoring from the planning/design stage upto the completion of construction, for declaring a building as a Green Building in compliance with:

INDIA:GRIHA

Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (Helping India Build Green)

Bridging the gap between demand and supply of non-renewable and scarce resources through cost-effective interventions

In the Indian context, these foreign rating systems would be useful only for AC buildings, Since a large number of buildings in India are non-AC and that too existing in varied climatic conditions, it is imperative to have a nationally relevant rating system. The bottom line: GRIHA is that much-needed Indian-centric green building rating system.

LEED GREEN BUILDINGS RATING SYSTEM

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating system is followed internationally. Points are awarded for adopting Green concepts in various categories and the Buildings are certified Green at levels such as Silver, Gold or Platinum based on the total number of points they get in LEED Rating.

This is International rating and would help to identify Indian project at par with international standards. The rating systems address eight major areas:

- Location and Planning
- Sustainable Sites
- Water Efficiency
- Energy and Atmosphere
- Materials and Resources
- Indoor Environmental Quality
- Innovation and Design Process
- Regional Priority

Buildings can qualify for four levels of certification:

Certified – 40 – 49 points
Silver – 50 – 59 points
Gold – 60 – 79 points
Platinum – 80 points and above

VI. ARCHITECTURAL CHARACTER

AN INDIGENOUS VERNACULAR OUTLOOK

Architecture is a medium of cultural expression. The entire Idea of the project is based on sustainable concepts of indigenous practices, to achieve not only ecological balance but aesthetic harmony as well. To create buildings those are both humane and ecologically sound.

Vernacular architectural techniques of India would be used for methods of construction which se locally available resources and traditions which ultimately express great indigenous expressions of the diverse culture of India. As vernacular architecture is considered to be an India’s Vernacular Architecture is a Reflection of Culture.

From adobe to stones to Bamboos, traditional building materials are being adapted to meet code-required standards for health and safety in contemporary buildings around the world. Not only are they cost effective and environmentally friendly, but, when used correctly, these mainstream construction materials.

Vernacular architecture has been loosing ground over the last couple of centuries, as modern methods prevail dominantly.

Vernacular Architecture has many wonderful building styles. This project would generate interest in this area and may set an example for others to follow:

“A PERFECT BLEND OF ART and ARCHITECTURE”

VII. DESIGN APPROACH (holistic design process)

BRIEF DESIGN DETAILS

NATIVE Indian trees suited to this region & Climate would be planted with due Introduction to generate interest among the Visitors.

1. TREES IN INDIA

Indian trees are an integral part of the culture and heritage of the country and they are referred as the green pearl in the Indian crown. They are an authoritative constituent of the natural landscape due to their prevention of eroding. They also purvey a specified weather-sheltered ecosystem in and under their foliage. In the ancient Hindu scripture in India, the trees are described as an extraterrestrial having its roots in underworld and branches in heaven. The Hindu scripture says that the threes unite and connect beings of all kinds in the world. This project would highlight the importance of Indian trees through Audio Visuals, Awareness programmes, Planting, Documenting etc.

The Indian trees are well known for their grandeur and majesty and they have always been associated with wisdom and immortality in India. The trees like Peepul, Banyan (Bodi tree), Banana, and Tulsi are some of the plants that hold special cultural and religious significance in India. Most of the trees found in India are native to India.

The Indian trees are also of several varieties according to their usages of their valuable properties. Almost all the parts of the trees like the bark, leaves, toots, fruits or timber, have some usage in India. The Indian medicinal trees are popular for their valuable medicinal properties all over the world and they are commonly used in the Indian traditional treatment methods like Ayurvedic, Unani, Homeopathic, etc.

a. Sacred Trees of South India

The worship of trees in India can be traced to the Indus Valley Civilization and the hymns of the Vedas also contain references to such sacred trees and plants on account of their being associated with certain deities and also because of their potent medicinal properties. This tradition continues till the present day in most parts of India including South India, in villages and urban centres. Plants like the Tulsi and trees like the Pipal are worshipped on a daily basis.

In South India, temples were constructed at places where certain trees were considered as the home of a particular deity. Later perhaps these trees were considered as sthalavrishas or the sacred tree connected with that particular temple where it was grown and worshipped.

The famous Ekamreshvara temple in the temple-town of Kanchipuram (Tamil Nadu) has the mango trees as the sthalavriksha. Goddess Parvati is said to have worshipped a Siva linga beneath this tree and was reunited with Siva. A very ancient sculpture inside this temple depicts this scene with the mange tree sculpted very prominently.

The bamboo is associated with many temples in Tamil Nadu, the most famous being the Nelliappar temple in Tirunelveli. Lord Siva enshrined here, is called in many ancient inscriptions as Venuvaneshvara, ( the Lord of the bamboo forest). The ubiquitous coconut tree, found in almost every part of South India, is also a sthalavriksha in many temples. The papal tree (arasa maram) is seen in many temples, both big and small.

The sweet-smelling jasmine (mulli) which is used in worship in temples and in homes is the sacred tree of very many Siva temples in South India. There are places known as Tirumullaivayil, and in the temples located at these sites the sacred tree is the mullai.

b. Trees in Indian Mythology and Folklore

The trees in Indian mythology and folklore bear spiritual importance in Indian legends and history. The Vedas, Puranas and Epics carry special references on these mythological trees. As a result these trees are worshipped across India alongside the deities even in the recent times.

Hindu mythology has mentioned the Banyan Tree time and again. Hence a special significance is associated with this tree. It is often referred to as the “Ashwath Vriksha”. In legends and folklores God Shiva as Dhashinamurthy is depicted sitting in silence under the banyan with rishis at his feet. This symbolizes an eternal life due to the tree’s unending expansion. The Hindus further believe that the banyan tree is a ’wish fulfilling divine tree’. The reference of this tree is found in various mythological texts as Bargad, Vatavriksh, and Barh.

Allergic rhinitis is an inflammation of the nasal passages, usually associated with watery nasal discharge and itching of the nose and eyes.

Types:

The two categories of allergic rhinitis include:
- Seasonal - occurs particularly during pollen seasons. Seasonal allergic rhinitis does not usually develop until after 6 years of age.
- Perennial - occurs throughout the year. This type of allergic rhinitis is commonly seen in younger children.

Two-thirds of all patients have symptoms of allergic rhinitis before the age of 30, but onset can occur at any age. Allergic rhinitis has no sexual predilection, although boys up to the age of 10 are twice as likely to have symptoms as girls. It is roughly estimated that one in three people have an active allergy at any given time and at least three in four people develop an allergic reaction at least once in their life time.

There is also a strong genetic predisposition to allergic rhinitis. One parent with a history of allergic rhinitis has about 30 percent chance of producing offspring with the disorder; the risk increases to 50 percent if both parents have a history of allergies.

Cause:

When an allergen such as pollen or dust is inhaled by a person with a sensitized immune system, it triggers antibody production. These antibodies have certain cells in them, which contain histamine. When these cells are stimulated by pollen and dust, histamine is released. This causes itching, swelling, and mucus production in ones body.

Ayurveda:

Allergic Rhinitis or sheetapitta from an Ayurvedic perspective is due to the toxins present in the body (Ama) and also due to the low immunity. Ama aggravates the levels of Pitta and Kapha in the body, giving rise to different symptoms of allergies. Ayurveda considers allergic rhinitis as a Kapha-Pitta disorder.

Treatment of Allergic Rhinitis at IVAC

IVAC believes the treatment of any diseases is balancing the three doshas present in the human body thereby treating the disease as a whole. Panchakarma-Vamana (the emesis therapy) and Virechana therapy (the laxatives therapy) are the two very effective detoxification programs that is employed at the centre which helps in balancing Pitta and Kapha. The treatment line at IVAC may also involve nasya and dhoomapana according to the disease status.

As a holistic approach the centre incorporates yoga and Pranayama, wherein bhastrika, ujjai are taught along with other asanas to cure shitapitta of respiratory tract. Certain dietary and lifestyle precautions are also a requirement to be followed which will be prescribed and recommended at the centre.

The goal of treatment is to reduce the allergy symptoms. Avoidance of the allergen or minimization of contact with it is the best treatment. Most importantly immunotherapy is also given the same importance as the treatment itself in the centre. Shilajit is a natural mineral pitch which is extensively used along with herbs and other Ayurvedic therapies to help boost the immune system.

Shilajit:

Shilajit is believed to bring about the needed balance and harmony in ones health. It is said that it acts as a restorative tonic, slowing down wear and tear of body tissues, which in turn delays ageing. Shilajit also increases the vigor & vitality. Because of its exceptional medicinal qualities, it is extensively used in treating many health ailments.

Yogis in ancient India and those who practiced Ayurvedic medicine heavily relied upon Shilajit and have attributed divine powers to the complex makeup of this mysterious substance.

Eight separate branches together create the entire ancient science, Ayurveda, including Rasayana, which is a Sanskrit word meaning rejuvenation. Shilajit is considered to be a Rasayana herb as well as an adaptogen. It is a natural herb that increases the body’s natural resistance in stress, trauma and diseases. This concept dates back to many centuries and has been noted in both Indian and Chinese medicines.

Found naturally only in parts of central Asia, China, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Tibet, Shilajit is formed through a process that takes thousands of years to complete.

Plants growing in the Himalayas are rich with much sought after nutrients which are thought to be the basis and sustainer of all forms of life. These bountiful floras grow, and then eventually die throughout the seasons and their nutrient gets absorbed into the soil. This process is repeated over and over again.

The Shilajit found in the Himalayas is therefore the fossilized forms of plant life that have undergone this process of growing, dying out, and being absorbed back into the earth.

Scientifically, shilajit is found to have qualities of antioxidants, amino acids, antibiotics, antifungals and antivirals, enzymes, hormones, nutrients, and it is also a powerful collection of biochemicals and phytochemicals .

Medicinal Use:

  • The substance replenishes the body with much needed minerals and vitamins. It is used as a powerful means of rejuvenator for both mind and body.
  • Shilajit is routinely recommended for those who have a weakened immune system.
  • It also enhances memory.
  • It helps keep all doshas, Kapha, Pitta, and Vata, in balance and harmony.
  • It is also used to treat painful conditions such as osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other diseases of the joints, as well as for relieving pain caused by injury to the muscles.
  • Intestinal disorders like gastritis, indigestion or constipation gets improved with Shilajit.
  • The nervous system also benefits from Shilajit. It is said that it improves nervous disorders, including paralysis.

Multiple Sclerosis is a disease in which the fatty myelin, a material that forms a layer usually around axon, the nerve fiber of the brain and spinal cord are damaged leading to a demyelinating disease of the nervous system where the conduction of signals is affected causing impairment in sensation, movement, cognition, or other functions depending on which nerves are involved. The disease onset usually occurs in young adults, and it is more common in females. It affects 2 to 150 people per 100, 000.

Symptoms of MS:

  • Visual disturbances
  • Muscular spasm
  • Numbness and weakness
  • Loss of sensation
  • Speech hindrance
  • Trembling
  • Giddiness
  • Cognitive defects
  • Depression.

Ayurvedic Concept of Multiple Sclerosis:

The modern medicine understands that the disease as a slow progression of patches of demyelination in the brain and spinal chord; it is less clear as to what triggers this process in the first place.

But from Ayurvedic perspective the imbalance and deterioration in the strength and stability of nervous system is caused due to the Vata imbalance. There are many Ayurveda recommendations to help restore this balance.

The build up of plagues around of plaques around affected nerves with accompanying inflammation is a classic example of impurities accumulating in tissues and disrupting delicate tissue biochemistry. Therefore cleansing and preventing the impurities from being created through improvements in digestion and metabolism is a fundamental approach of Ayurveda for MS.

Modern medical theories have also stated that infection by a latent virus is a possible cause of MS. Strengthening the body’s natural immune function is exactly what the main techniques of Ayurveda aim at thereby, preventing and treating disease through stimulating the natural healing ability of the body.

When the patient fluctuates between remissions and relapses phases of the disease, he experiences high mental and physical stress. Technique of Ayurveda can be utilized in reversing the body?s response to stress through meditation program, Ayurvedic massage, heat treatments, and yoga asana postures.

IVAC Treatment Line:

The treatment at IVAC is conducted under the supervision of an Ayurvedic health consultant. IVAC provides the most comprehensive and natural approach for multiple sclerosis available today through its unique assessment of a condition and its wide range of time tested recommendations.

Panchakarma:

Panchakarma is recommended with the best herbal oil that suits your condition. Daily herbal oil massage provides a deeply soothing and balancing effect to the entire nervous system. The motion of massage creates heat and friction which enhance circulation and help cleanse the areas of chemical impurities that could be causing symptoms of multiple sclerosis. The oil and herbs cleanse and nourish the tissues thereby helping tissue development and repair. The herbs deeply penetrate the tissue beds, thereby balancing the vata condition too.

Food Recommendation:

Multiple Sclerosis can also be aggravated through improper diet. For example, some foods can make Vata highly active, thereby worsening many of the symptoms of multiple sclerosis. IVAC will educate about foods you can digest easily thereby creating the micronutrients that can be absorbed into the tissues for rebuilding their strength and balance. The centre will also provide Ayurvedic cooking classes and various other programs to improve your knowledge about the right food, the right way of cooking it, hints on digestion; all important prerequisite for overcoming multiple sclerosis. In summary, improper nutrition can create and aggravate multiple sclerosis, but proper nutrition can go a long way towards curing and preventing it.

Stress Management:

IVAC also provides classes for Stress Management and improved mental and Emotional Function. Many MS patients experience heightened stress, anxiety and mental fatigue. The sleep disturbance often created by the symptoms of chronic disorders increase fatigue, which in turn increases one’s susceptibility to stress, which in turn aggravates the multiple sclerosis condition. This is due to hormonal changes and other biochemical responses to stress that can aggravate the nervous system, create pain and depress the immune response. Transcendental Meditation is incorporated in the program to remove the stress component of pain, insomnia and other symptoms of chronic disorders.

Lifestyle Recommendation:

Improper lifestyle also aggravates the Vata imbalance which is the basis of multiple sclerosis and disrupts the body’s natural cleansing cycles. Consultants at IVAC will review your daily routine and provide the information you need to help to create a daily schedule for increasing balance in your nervous system and aid in healing your body.

Daily Treatment Duration:

Your daily three-hour treatment program of massage, application of herbal preparations and mild internal cleansing is the cornerstone of the treatment. The combination of these three treatments received every day for 5 to 21 days creates the ideal internal physical environment for healing.

Traditional Ayurveda theory says that herbs and anti- oxidant, free radicals are most effective after a person completes an internal cleansing program. The main focus of your in-residence stay is the Ayurveda cleansing and rejuvenation treatments. Once the program finishes you are ready to gain maximum benefits from your herbal program.

Hemorrhoids – more commonly known as piles – is a very painful condition wherein the internal and external veins of the rectum and anal region become varicose, swelling and inflammation. The veins can be seen protruding from the anal area. If bleeding occurs, then they are called as bleeding piles. Both bleeding and non-bleeding piles are painful. When bulging hemorrhoidal veins are irritated, they cause surrounding membranes to swell, burn, itch, become very painful and bleed. Hemorrhoids are caused by too much pressure in rectum, forcing blood to stretch and bulge the walls of the veins, sometimes rupturing them. If the internal hemorrhoid pushes out of the anal opening, this hemorrhoid is called prolapsed hemorrhoid. Sometimes, blood can pool in an external hemorrhoid, forming a clot (thrombus). This hemorrhoid is called a thrombused external hemorrhoid. Hemorrhoids can occur at any age, but become more common as one gets older. Younger people, pregnant women and women who had children are
most apt to develop hemorrhoidal problems.

The Ayurvedic approach of Hemorrhoids or Bleeding Piles:

In Ayurveda, hemorrhoids are called as “Arsha Shoola”, which literally means ‘pain from pricking like needles’. This is indeed how the pain from the hemorrhoids is felt. It is caused due to vitiation of any of the three doshas. It is classified as a digestive disorder; accumulation of waste materials in the rectal area can give rise to piles. The chances of piles are increased by other factors such as sitting on hard seats, Age, Genetics, Heavy lifting, Chronic Constipation and Pregnancy.

Symptoms:

Since hemorrhoids can be caused due to any of the three doshas, the symptoms are different.

1.Vata type of Hemorrhoids – These piles is hard and darker in color; almost black. The pain is acute. Constipation is present.
2. Pitta type of Hemorrhoids – These piles is soft and reddish in color. Bleeding is present. Other symptoms are excessive thirst, fever and diarrhea.
3. Kapha type of Hemorrhoids – These piles is slimy to the touch. They are large and soft and whitish in color. The person has digestive problems.

Treatment of Piles

Since the people don’t feel better after spending lots of money for the chopping of allopathic tablets and surgery for the hemorrhoids. Now the Ayurveda relive the hemorrhoids successfully without any side effect by using several herbs like Trikatu, Cassia fistula, Mimosa pudica, Ailanthus excelsa, Blumea balsamifera, Semicarpus anacardium.
One has to know what to eat and fallow the balancing diet with proper nutrition in the food what they eat. For proper balance of doshas one have to fallow dietary guidelines as green leafy vegetables must be consumed in high amounts as these have the necessary fibers required for proper digestion. Bitter and astringent tastes are better in case of hemorrhoids. Vegetables such as yam, spinach, radish, and okra are beneficial.

Mainly:

1.Carrot (Daucus carota): Carrots are effective in reducing the bleeding of the piles.
2.Garlic (Allium sativum): Garlic can stop the growth of bleeding piles.

Avoid food that is difficult to digest such as oily and spicy foods, red meats and rich desserts.

Management of Hemorrhoids or Bleeding Piles at IVAC

Treatment at IVAC for hemorrhoids has a twofold intention:-

(i) To reduce the constipation that is associated with the hemorrhoids and

(ii) To relieve the pains of the piles and reduce them.

In order to reduce the constipation, asafetida, fennel and cumin are generally prescribed. Application of sandalwood or sesame oil on the piles can help in case of external piles.

The commonly adopted Panchakarma treatments for Hemorrhoids are Basthi and Virechana.

Panchakarma

Pre-purification therapies are the first ones applied to loosen the toxins, open up the circulation channels and get the body ready for discarding these wastes. These methods are highly relaxing for the body and mind. The following pre-purification methods are usually adopted in the treatment of Hemorrhoids. Snehapana is oleation therapy and consists of oral intake of medicated ghee in empty stomach. Common ingredients such as malabar nut, Wildsnakegourd, Sweetflag, Sandalwood, Neem, Amaltas, Asparagus,
Ginger, Mustard and Gooseberry etc. are used.

Lepam is the application of a specially prepared paste made of rich medicinal herbs, on the body or on specific parts of the body. Dry ginger, Sweet flag, Vitex, Sesame etc are some of the herbs commonly used in the paste.

Kshara Karma

IVAC is the first Ayurvedic Medical Centre in Mysore which is providing the Kshara Karma treatment for the public health purpose. Kshara Sutra therapy is an affective Ayurvedic management of anorectal diseases like Hemorrhoids (Piles), Fissure–in–ano and especially for Fistula-in–ano. Kshara sutra is a thread coated with certain herbal medicines, which acts as an effective cleaning and healing agent of the tissue involved. The thread is prepared by applying the coating of apamarga kshara, Haridra churna and Snuhi ksheera. Kshara suthra is prepared under all aspects measures, sealed and preserved.
